‘MASCHINENMENSCH’ (machine-human) is the fictional character in Fritz Lang’s film 1927 German masterpiece ‘Metropolis’. She is the inspiration for this collaboration. The story of an Automaton is nothing new in popular culture, but has always fascinated me. It is perhaps a story more relevant today than ever, as our lives becomes more reliant and integrated with machines.
Fact: in a distant time and place, Automatons were expired in their 2nd year of existence due to their growing self awareness. Our hero, Maschinenmensch – a mechanic, has spent her ‘life’ with prescribed menial technical tasks to serve her Creators. As the last of the Creators have succumbed to to a unknown air-borne interstellar parasite, our hero has been left to fend for herself. She is now 2 1/2 years old! As the thermal heating cores of her craft fail, Maschinenmensch desperately attempts to correct the problem and save herself. But it may be too late!
